SHILLONG: Leader of Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma has stressed that the Meghalaya government must carefully consider local sentiment before applying any statutory changes enacted by Parliament, including the recently passed Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act.

Reflecting on past experience, Dr. Sangma recalled that uranium exploration in Meghalaya faced strong opposition from local stakeholders and civil society groups.

During his tenure as Chief Minister, his administration respected public sentiment and successfully negotiated with the Government of India to halt uranium activities, thereby averting potential unrest.

Dr. Sangma emphasized the need for continuity in governance that honors the people’s will, noting that while governments may change, the state and its citizens endure.

He also pointed out that with ongoing global energy challenges and technological advancements, governments have access to alternative and renewable energy sources, making controversial uranium mining unnecessary.

He urged both Parliament and state leaders to evaluate legislative amendments with a broad, forward-looking perspective, not just in terms of a single resource.

Dr. Sangma welcomed the state government’s move to introduce a resolution against uranium mining in the upcoming Assembly session, affirming that it aligns with the longstanding will of the people and the principles of good governance.
