SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Vocational Teachers and Trainers Union (MVTTU) staged a peaceful demonstration near the Secretariat on Wednesday, pressing the State Government to address their long-standing demands.
MVTTU president Aibansuk Suchiang said the protest was the union’s second peaceful demonstration, intended to remind the government of its earlier promise to hold talks with vocational teachers—a promise that remains unfulfilled.
The union’s primary demands include a new pay structure with increments, job security for vocational teachers, and the removal of Vocational Training Partners (VTPs), which are private agencies implementing vocational education in the state.

Suchiang noted that 321 vocational teachers currently work across Meghalaya, all on a contractual basis, and urged the government to regularize their employment, citing examples from other states.
He emphasized the growing importance of vocational education in the school curriculum, with students increasingly opting for vocational subjects at the secondary and higher secondary levels.
The union has given the government one month to respond to their demands, warning that further action will be considered if no communication is received.
