SHILLONG: Mawryngkneng MLA Heavingstone Kharpran met Agriculture Minister Timothy D. Shira on Friday to discuss the various challenges faced by farmers in the state, particularly the sharp decline in agricultural produce prices.
Speaking to the media, Kharpran said the minister listened attentively to the concerns raised and assured him that the matter would be brought to the attention of the Chief Minister.
Expressing concern for the plight of farmers, the MLA noted that many had taken bank loans and suggested that the government consider waiving these loans to provide relief.

He also urged the State Government to grant an additional ₹4,000 to farmers, supplementing the ₹6,000 they currently receive under the Central Government’s PM-KISAN scheme.
Kharpran further recommended that the government formulate a dedicated Agriculture Policy to safeguard farmers and effectively address the challenges they face.
