SHILLONG: Former Meghalaya Chief Minister and Songsak MLA Mukul Sangma has challenged official claims that the recent fatal encounter in Songsak involved only interstate criminals, arguing it is a clear sign of resurgent militancy in the region.
Sangma cited internal security intelligence suggesting a broader, more sinister plot underway in Meghalaya, with the latest shootout representing just the surface.
He stated that he has repeatedly warned both the State Security Commission and the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly about the suspicious movements of unidentified, heavily armed individuals.
While he acknowledged successful police operations against minor outfits, Sangma emphasized that disparate groups are attempting to regroup and wage war against the state by exploiting vulnerable populations.

Highlighting the region’s security complexities, Sangma noted that militant activity transcends administrative boundaries, with forest corridors connecting the Khasi-Jaintia and Garo Hills long serving as safe havens for insurgents.
He referenced past peace agreements, such as the 2004 ANVC Suspension of Operation, and noted that these corridors have provided training grounds for major Northeast militant groups.
Sangma cautioned the government against complacency, urging a proactive and sustained commitment to peace rather than relying on temporary law-and-order measures.
