SHILLONG: Rambrai District Council Member (MDC) Lurshai Kharbani has requested the Meghalaya government to establish a temporary police camp in West Khasi Hills border villages following recent disruptions by Assam officials.
The appeal was made during a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Prestone Tynsong, after local residents of Noapara reported repeated attempts by Assam authorities to conduct census activities in villages including Kampaduli, Noapara, and Bangjen.
Kharbani emphasized that a dedicated security presence is needed to safeguard residents from external interference, as villagers have already completed enumeration under Meghalaya’s jurisdiction and have resisted duplicate census efforts from Assam.

While he is still gathering details about alleged forced enrollments, Kharbani assured further investigation at the village level.
Home Minister Tynsong responded by promising to take up the issue directly with Assam’s Chief Secretary to seek a permanent resolution to the border dispute and assured steps toward establishing the requested police camp.
The deployment of additional police forces remains the primary demand of the affected villages to prevent further outside interference.
